HPN Training (1) HIV Core Knowledge

HIV Core Knowledge

This is a training module for new colleagues in the Australian community-based response to HIV. It is part of the HIV Peer Navigation Training Program but the training in this module is open to everyone.

About this module

This module has been written for people who have recently started working in the community response to HIV in Australia. Instead of starting in the traditional place with the biology and epidemiology of HIV, it starts with our shared goal — improving quality of life for all people living with and affected by HIV. (This includes HIV-negative people!) This goal unites people working in prevention and positive health promotion — everyone wants better quality of life for the people and communities we represent and serve. As you will encounter in the module, when we say we want quality of life for all, that introduces questions about disparities, health equity, meeting health needs and building health literacy, as well. And those questions ultimately lead us through the traditional biological and epidemiological building blocks.

Learning objectives

  1. Participants can locate a goal of good quality of life for all PLHIV in the context of national and global HIV strategies and the cascade.
  2. Participants understand the basic epidemiological concepts and methods needed to identify disparate HIV outcomes between groups.
  3. Participants can explain why disparities are unfair and understand the need for preventive and proactive responses to health inequity.
  4. Participants understand the role played by the time it takes to meet health needs in the emergence of health disparities.
  5. Participants understand the concept of health literacy and the role HIV Peer Navigators can play in helping people with HIV navigate complex systems of HIV and social care and support.
  6. Participants can say which different evaluation methods could be used effectively to answer different evaluation questions.
  7. Participants develop a basic understanding of particular topics including HIV treatment approaches, reproductive autonomy, sexual wellbeing and HIV stigma.

Getting started

To get started, click the first lesson in the list below, titled ‘Case Narratives.’

As you finish each lesson, remember to hit ‘Mark Complete!‘ This will help you track where you’re up to in the outline. The tick-mark beside each Lesson or Topic will turn solid green when you have completed that material.

Assessment

At the end of a topic, you may find Assessment Tasks. Assessment tasks are completed in a Workbook – a Word document that you download at the beginning of the unit.

When your workbook is completed, you can send it to the NAPWHA Learning Projects Officer and your supervisor/manager for feedback. The feedback offers appreciation for your strengths and may also identify additional learning opportunities.

Talk with your supervisor or manager about whether you want to complete assessment for the program.

Completed assessments from this program can be documentation for recognition of prior learning for a TAFE qualification in community services.
